Los Angeles man charged with setting homeless woman on fire

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A 24-year-old Los Angeles area man accused of setting a homeless woman on fire as she slept on a bus stop bench was charged on Monday with attempted murder and aggravated mayhem.

Prosecutors say Dennis Petillo doused the 67-year-old woman with a flammable liquid as she slept on a bench in the Los Angeles section of Van Nuys in the early morning hours of December 27 and then set her on fire.

The woman, who has not been identified by authorities, survived the attack but remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Petillo, who was scheduled to make an initial court appearance on Monday afternoon, faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if he is convicted at a trial.

Prosecutors said they would ask that he be held on $1.03 million bail.

Acer President: 'Still Too Early' to Call Windows 8 a Flop

Will My Desktop Work With Windows 8?

Is Windows 8 off to a slow start? Depends which manufacturer you ask. Dell CEO Michael Dell has said that demand for Windows 8 from both consumers and enterprise buyers is, "quite high," whereas Fujitsu president Masami Yamamoto has said the exact opposite ? Windows 8 demand is "weak" and the company will miss its internal targets for PC shipments as a direct result of Windows 8's lackluster appeal thus far.

Take a look at Acer, however, and you're going to get two sides of the same story. Acer's North American president, Emmanuel Fromont, was quoted in The New York Times last week saying that Windows 8 demand remains low ? partially the result of customers being hesitant at adopting the new touch-themed user interface.

"There was not a huge spark in the market," said Fromont, in his interview with the Times. "It's a slow start, there's no question."

Ask Acer's top dog, however, and you'll get a bit more optimism than Fromont's quote seems to suggest. According to Acer president Jim Wong, in an interview with Digitimes, critics are jumping the gun a bit in suggesting that Windows 8 might be a flop.

"In the past, market observers would accuse Windows of lacking innovations. And Windows 8 with brand new features have still been greeted with pessimism. Some observers believe the new interface and touchscreen control will dramatically delay adoption by consumers. But companies must take risks when introducing innovations, and therefore it is still too early to say whether Windows 8 is a success or not."

Wong hasn't been all that thrilled about Microsoft jumping into the hardware space with its Surface tablets ? effectively competing against the very OEMs that it's simultaneously trying to woo with the Windows 8 platform in total. While Acer will release Windows RT-based devices going forward, Wong said that the company plans to focus mainly on x86 architecture, "since the major demand from Windows users is still related to data management."

Windows 8's focus on the "touch" experience for laptops will ultimately allow touchscreen-based laptops to win out over standard laptops, Wong suggests. According to Acer's own research, users only need to spend 20 minutes or so poking at their laptop's screens before they're "hooked" into wanting to touch the screens of other devices they interact with.

In other words, touchscreens are compelling. However, it might take around two to three years for shipments of touch-friendly laptops to ultimately surpass those of their non-pokeable competitors.

IPad app

Just a quick thought on the iPad app in development.

Often I access my mfi from within as well as without my network.

It would be great if we could have a primary and secondary server IP.

So that we can with minimal change or effort be able to access the mfi server on both a public and private IP depending on where we physically are located.

The Six Biggest Investing Lessons of 2012 | The Reformed Broker

  • Joshua M Brown
  • December 28th, 2012

If I should die or lose my WordPress password tomorrow, I'd be satisfied with this post being the last thing you've ever read from me.

Because what is the point of publishing 6500 blog posts (as I have) if you can't crystallize and document the most important lessons learned on a regular basis? I think I've distilled everything I've chronicled this year into the six most important lessons for investors. Other years there are other lessons taught, but this is the knowledge you should be walking away with after 2012:

1. Sometimes there's no one left to buy

This is a very old lesson but a crucial one. When everyone's already in, where are the buyers going to come from?

Over the summer, Apple became the Jesus Stock; no one would ever sell it but, unfortunately, anyyone who could buy it and wanted to buy it had already done so. It had become the greatest Hedge Fund Hotel stock of all time, a massive weighting in all the large cap indexes and an institutional as well as a retail "darling", one of the most widely-held investments in the world. I was at the Ira Sohn conference when David Einhorn announced to a breathless audience of a few thousand asset managers that Apple was his next big pick. It was worth just over $500 billion and Einhorn explained how he had called both the NYSE and the Nasdaq and neither one of them had a restriction against it being worth a trillion.

It was lights out ever since that moment...

Apple has since lost more than $170 billion in market capitalization, a larger dollar amount than the total market caps of the 54 smallest companies in the S&P 500 combined.? Without any Apple enthusiasts left to come in and buy, and absent a decent-sized short interest, there were no natural buyers and a whole host of tax-motivated sellers who'd ridden the stock for a decade, racking up 8000% returns. Oh well.

2. Sometimes there's no one left to sell

Research in Motion's story this fall? was the antithesis of what we saw with Apple. The stock hit six bucks a share, almost a complete and total wipeout of the company's value. But then the market spoke in early September. It said, "Maybe this company is not long-term viable and cannot compete with Apple and Android - but it will not die now. No sir, not on this day." RIMM more than doubled to 14 within a few weeks, a monster return from the depths that happened concurrently with the Apple bludgeoning from 705 to 500.

Take everything you thought you knew about platforms and handsets and technology and throw it out the window, this was about supply and demand, not who had the better product. Just as there was no one left to buy Apple, below 10 dollars a share there wasn't a soul left who would sell their Research In Motion.

Sear the memory of this into your hippocampus.

3. Things change quickly

Let's take a time machine back to the end of 2011 and lay out what we believe will be the top performing equity plays for 2012. Let's tell people the financials, especially the large cap banks, will lead the S&P 500 along with the homebuilder stocks against a backdrop of still-record foreclosure activity, increasing regulation, horrible employment and wage growth stats, etc. Then let's tell them that recessionary - bordering on depressionary - Europe will be the home of the hottest equity markets on earth, with Germany running up 30% by year-end.

What sort of response do you think we'd have gotten to a forecast like that a year ago? Probably slapped across our fat faces with a Scotch salmon wrapped in newspaper. Laughed out of the building, dog.

But things change - in 2012, the?Dow Jones U.S. Home Construction Index was up an amazing 78%, the Financials were the best performing of the 10 S&P Sectors (up 26%) and Europe's main index, the Stoxx 600, is up a solid 15% for the year, over 20% from its June low.

This spring I watched as Jeff Gundlach unveiled his now-legendary pairs trade - short Apple versus a 10X bet on natural gas - the crowd was incredulous, Apple was trading vertically higher after all and nat gas was well on its way to zero.? Turns out that was the trade of the year. Know this - safe can be risky and risky can be safe in the blink of an eye. And mean reversion is always in the on-deck circle, playa.

4. Trends can and will persist past the point of sanity

Let's consider that US 10-year Treasury bonds have been yielding around 1.7% for most of the year while the annual run rate of inflation is 2.2%, thus guaranteeing a destruction of purchasing power for the holders. This bond binge continuing despite a growing economy, low stock volatility and no major systemic disruption in the markets at the moment is quite a thing to behold. Investors spent the year continuously pulling money from stocks to flood the bond market like the animated broomsticks in Fantasia with their buckets sloshing about. It makes no sense, but betting against it has been a loser.

How long can these trends go one while everyone agrees they shouldn't?? Ask some of the geniuses who've been entangled in the Short-Japanese Government Bonds (JGBs) "widowmaker trade". The answer is almost forever, and you will capitulate just before the turn. Of course you will.

5. "Uncertainty" is a buy signal, not a sell signal

When you hear the term "uncertainty" being bandied about from every corner of the universe, you may want to consider putting in some buy orders. Let's take Greece. How much uncertainty was there about the oft-lamented Mediterranean problem child nation? The maximum. There could not have been more. Each day, the discussion was about when (not if) they would leave the Euro Zone, would they voluntarily withdraw or would they be kicked out, how may millions of people would starve on the streets when it happened and who would be next.

And while all these motherfuckers were busy blabbing away about the "Fate of Greece" the Athens Stock Exchange decided to rally 34% this year, doubling the returns of the S&P 500, Switzerland, France, the Emerging Markets index, the Asia Pacific region and just about everything else in sight. Your passing, superficial knowledge of the risk factors of a given thing, gleaned from newspapers and television and repeated ad nauseum by a million wannabe pundits and newsletter writers, are priced in. Tell me something I don't know.

Uncertainty is why Wilbur Ross gets to buy up the nation's entire complex of bankrupt coal and steel plants in the 1990's while no one else would even think about it. It's why Dan Loeb can buy a billion dollars worth of Greek bonds in August and sell them for a $500 million profit four months later.

Uncertainty is how kings are made.

6. Usually, the asteroid misses earth

Markets usually climb a Wall of Worry they say. Let me tell you something - investors of other eras don't even know the meaning of the term Wall of Worry.

The shit we've had to listen to and worry about this year all at once will be looked back on someday by a future generation and marveled at. China's hard landing, the break-up of the Euro, the Fiscal Cliff and on and on. This is to say nothing of the collapse of the largest commodities brokerages, the London Whale, the LIBOR scandal, Lloyd Blankfein totally nude, the loss of trusted reporter Kelly Evans to England, etc. Some of the top veteran hedge fund managers threw the towel in this year, for no reason other than they had had enough, and possessed no explanation for what they were supposed to be saying or doing anymore. The emotions, the intellectual incongruity of the whole thing, it was just gut-wrenching and the fun - if ever it was fun - had been wrung out of it. Even Wall Street's full-of-shit Chief Strategist promotion machine struggled this year, a record amount of bearishness had crept into their forecasts and estimates - something we almost never see.

If you've traded and invested this year and came out okay, then you are to be commended, this was a tough one no matter what the index statistics say. Nerve-wracking doesn't even come close as a descriptor - we were Riverdancing on a frozen-over pond with steel-tipped boots and ice sharks swimming below the cracking surface just waiting for us to fall through. And those ice sharks had some kind of weird fish syphilis.

The asteroid certainly seemed to have been getting closer at various moments, but alas, the end of the world was not to be. I'm protectively shielding my crotch with one hand as I write this, wincing at the thought of an immediate boot-kick to the crotch from any of the disasters we've managed to skate past.

But once again, the asteroid missed earth in 2012. We are alive and live to fight another year, much to the chagrin of basement-dwelling misanthropes and grumpy old men everywhere. To the fear-mongers: I'm so sorry your apocalypse was staved off another twelve months, better luck in 2013, bitches :)

To everyone else - those of us who are investing for prosperity and for the future, I'll say that it's been an honor serving in the trenches with you this year. Sometimes we traded together and sometimes we had opposing positions on. But always, we did our best to remain constructive and to make sense of the news and the data and the action on our screens. And now we're that much smarter and tougher, wizened and battle-tested, for the new year to come.

Three Myths About Business Networking | Love, Life, and ...

Please you this to connect others with our network.

Please you this to connect others with our network.

Myth #1: Networking is all the same

Networking is a social hobby for people who are not gifted entrepreneurs. For serial entrepreneurs, people who are born to invent, create, build and operate any size company, networking is the zone by which they connect to thought leaders, and peers who help them to achieve great success.

Networking in and of itself is not all the same. There many kinds of networking environments, and it usually depends on the end goal. You begin with the end in mind. Christmas parties at work can be considered a networking event.

Many networking organizations will have you to believe that they have better members based on the prices that they charge annually or per event. They will have you to believe that the higher price or location of the networking event like a country club, means that you have access to a higher network of people, who will peer-connect you to the types of business deals or clients that you target.

The truth is, these are not indicators of networking success.

Business Networking does not make you want to scream!

Business Networking does not make you want to scream!

Myth #2: Networking is all about business

Networking hobbyists as we will refer to them here have jobs, and have no intention to retire from their job to run their business. Running a business is a socially acceptable project that peers admire, but there is no real passion.

They always talk about the clouds, the moon and Jesus.?They are always giving themselves whiplash. They stop and go. Let me give you an example.

I am a Christian but I am really careful about people who constantly quote Jesus. In general, I may make a statement without realizing it, that may reference my beliefs especially if we are speaking positive. I am talking specifically about people who never give you straight answers, and always talk about ?waiting on God?. You?re running a business. Stop lying. There are some things that we can have patience with, but I believe that if you have run across this, you understand this part of the article well.

You May Also Like: Healing the Business Owner?s Soul?

Networking hobbyists may not have a business plan but they encourage you to have one. There isn?t a real plan however because they are likable, they can generate a social buzz. This doesn?t mean that they are making money, it means that you are attracted to, and attracting false humility, and masked people who likely do not have the same level of dreams and desires that you do.

As an example, I know of someone (who obviously shall remain nameless) who runs a business for women. Her focus is connecting them, yet her business is a revolving door, and under her leadership some people have lost their businesses. But, when she stands in front of women she says, ?I?m doing this for you. I don?t need anything.?

Does that sound like an entrepreneur? You sound incompetent. What entrepreneur do you know would tell their customers that they don?t need anything? It sounds like you are not invested, and that you are unskilled at running a business.

Networking hobbyists are not about business at all. They call it business but it?s just a dressed up professionals who lack real business gifting. I don?t believe that this can be taught in school. I think it is wrapped in your spirit. You came here that way.

In order to find the type of events that will be life changing for you, I believe that you have look past the expensive suits and professional titles. You must look deeper into the ambitions of each person and their selflessness. Will they pick up the phone and call a contact on your behalf? They will if they see in you, what you see in them.

People who were born to be entrepreneurs are about business when they network. Sure they want to get to know you, but more than anything they want to connect. Entrepreneurs understand that there are times when you gain friends from a networking event, but that is rare. You are looking for people of integrity to do business with, or to be connected to, the friendship will form itself.

Myth #3: Networking is about making money.

Many times we connect with business people who are not in business to make money, they are in business to be busy, to look important.

How do you choose a networking organization? Go network with people who cannot live without their independence, who are not fearful to make money. Business owners who are not afraid to charge you, or afraid of taking calculated risks are people you want to be around.

Networking is about making money, but it seems that this is a myth because of the saturation of people who come to network who have no idea how to make money. Many business owners are in their beginning stages, and they will come to events wanting to build a business when they need some business classes, research and/or coaching/mentoring. Business at any stage is exciting. I am certainly not comparing or condemning those who are just getting their feet wet. I am however advising that you keep your goals in mind when choosing when, where, how and why you are networking.

One of the biggest things that I believe we face as business owners is learning how to ask for money. If you are selling a product or a service, you should know how to ask for money, without feeling bad about your price.

You May Also Like: Business Networking with Ressurrection Graves?

Being a business owner requires some maturity in receiving rejection. It is one of the hardest things to learn, and honestly I don?t think it ever completely subsides. But there are times that you say no when someone is asking you to something for free or that makes you feel lower than your personal value assessment, and it empowers you to say no and walk away.

If you are a movie watcher, you?ll find old movies from every era mention the word recession. We are always headed for a great depression, and every other president is crying that we are in a deficit or broke. People who can not afford your price, are not your clients. It really is that simple. Match your price and your presentation, so that you can attract the business clients who will pay you to do what you do well.

Online Used Car Auctions Versus Live Used Car Auctions | Internet

As it pertains to purchasing an used car from an used car market, you will see that you?ve numerous different options. Two of your most popular options includ?

Are you enthusiastic about buying a car or truck? Have you ever considered purchasing a car from an auto auction, if you?re? Purchasing an used car through a car auction an car auction, that is also commonly referred to, is a superb method to find a large choice of quality, reliable, yet affordable used cars on the market.

In regards to purchasing an used car from an used car auction, you will discover that you?ve a number of different choices. Two of your most common choices contain attending an used car auction or playing an on line used car auction. If this really is your first time trying to buy an used car from an auto auction, you could be unsure regarding which type of used car auction you must choose. It?s best in the event that you first take the time to familiarize your self with both on the web auto auctions and live auto auctions, when it concerns making a choice.

As you probably already know just, online car or truck auctions are car auctions that take place over the internet. These auctions, themselves, are available in several different forms. For example, it is possible to purchase an used car from an on line auction internet site. In the last several years, the acceptance of on the web market sites has increased. That?s what has led many car owners to record their used cars on the market online. The only disadvantage to doing so is that you actually know nothing about the car owner. It can be difficult, if perhaps not entirely impossible, if they have even the on the market car in their possession to tell. Also, online auction internet sites let car owners from throughout the country sell vehicles online. It can make the distribution expensive, while this does give a greater selection to you of vehicles to select from.

Another kind of online auto auction that you need to be able to find online is auto deals that are controlled by old-fashioned auction houses or organizations. As a result of reputation of the internet, a significant number of auction owners are rethinking the way which they conduct business. Many are now starting to change their live auctions with on line auctions and many are also deciding to accomplish both. When an house or company chooses with an on the web used car auction, they often achieve this right on their very own webpage. What is good about taking part in this type of auction is that you ought to manage to locate a local auction company. This would make the supply of the vehicle in question easier and it could give the opportunity to you to prevent by and examine or inspect the vehicle that you?d want to consider bidding on.

While on the web auto auctions do sound appealing, mostly because of their benefit, there?s nothing can beat attending an actual, live auto market. In reality, it is often suggested that those who desire to get a car from an used car auction attend a live one. Live vehicle auctions are good as you are in a position to choose which auctions you would like to attend. This means that if you are now living in a particular area, like the Chicago area, you may elect to attend a local car auction, as opposed to one that?s located too much away. You also have the option of choosing to attend a totally free used car auction or one which requires the payment of an entrance fee; your choice is yours to create.

Probably, the greatest good thing about buying an used car from a live used car market is the proven fact that you?re able to see the car yourself. Actually, it is possible to often do significantly more than just start to see the car. Several car auction houses or businesses have planned examination periods. These sessions are where you are able to check each car that you could be interested in buying, inside and out.

Of course, your choice as to whether you?d prefer to buy a car from an used car auction or an online used car auction is yours to produce, but you should know that many car owners report achievement when buying from a live car auction. For starters, you may want to check out the live car auctions published by North Shore Auto Auction. Should you maybe not find what you are looking for, you may then continue to examine your other options; choices that may include online car or truck auctions.

Secom offers a private security drone, serves as our eyes away from the office

Modern security cameras are rather limited: if an incident doesn't happen within a pre-defined field of vision, a company won't know what's happening until it's too late. Secom is giving anxious offices a rare solution in what's supposedly the first airborne drone for private security. Its customized Ascending Technologies quadrotor can take to the air if there's a break-in and record what's happening, even in areas that would normally represent blind spots. The automaton can also track moving subjects with a laser sensor and knows enough to keep its distance. Japanese firms wanting Secom's robot sentry will have to wait until after April 2014, when they can rent one at about ¥5,000 ($58) per month; the investment could be worthwhile just to freak out a few would-be burglars.

Ambushed NY firemen shot dead; two police killed elsewhere

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A gunman, who spent 17 years in prison for murder, ambushed and killed two volunteer firefighters and wounded two others on Monday near Rochester, New York, as they responded to a house fire he deliberately set, police said.

William Spengler, 62, shot and killed himself after a gunfight with a police officer in Webster, a Rochester suburb, Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering said.

"It was a trap set by Mr. Spengler, who laid in wait and shot first responders," Pickering told a news conference.

Separately, a police officer in Wisconsin and another in Texas were shot and killed on Monday, according to police and media reports.

The attacks on first responders came 10 days after one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history that left 20 students and six adults dead at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, and intensified the debate about gun control in the United States.

Spengler was convicted of manslaughter in 1981 for beating his 92-year-old grandmother to death with a hammer, according to New York State Department of Corrections records. After prison he spent eight years on parole.

"We don't have an easy reason" for the attack on the firefighters, Pickering said, "but just looking at the history ... obviously this was an individual with a lot of problems."

Spengler opened fire around 5:45 a.m. after two of the firefighters arrived at the house in a fire truck and two others responded in their own cars, Pickering said.

Pickering appeared to wipe tears from his eyes at an earlier news conference when he identified the dead firefighters as Lieutenant Michael Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka. Chiapperini was also a police lieutenant.

The injured firefighters, one of whom was in critical condition, were identified as Joseph Hofsetter and Theodore Scardino. Off-duty Police Officer John Ritter was hit by gunfire as he drove past the scene.

Pickering said police had found several types of weapons, including a rifle used to shoot the firefighters. As a convicted felon it was illegal for Spengler to own guns.

Police had not had any contact with Spengler in the "recent past," Pickering said.

Four houses were destroyed by the fire and four were damaged, Pickering said.

COPS TARGETED

Police Officer Jennifer Sebena, 30, was found dead on Monday in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, suburb of Wauwatosa, police said.

Sebena was on patrol between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. and wearing body armor when she was shot several times, police said. She was found by another officer after she did not respond to calls from the police dispatcher.

In Houston, Texas, an officer with the Bellaire Police Department died after a shootout at around 9 a.m. and a bystander was also killed, according to local media reports.

A spokesperson for the Houston Police Department was not immediately available for comment. A police officer answering the telephone confirmed media reports but declined further comment. A suspect was in the hospital, according to reports.

Before Monday's killings, the Washington-based National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund reported that 125 federal, state and local officers had died in the line of duty this year.

Forty-seven deaths were firearms-related, 50 were from traffic-related incidents, and 28 were from other causes, it said.

Product Launches ? What You Should Know - Internet Marketing Blog

You will never escape the stark reality of having to rely on your own ability to smartly implement something like eczematreatmentsite.org and choose what is best for your company as you go forth. So many speed bumps are encountered just as soon as a person decides to thrown their hat in the ring. The number of unknowns is yet one more possibly unpleasant aspect of this. One common complaint is having no clue where to begin, and once again that is something easily fixed. When it comes to fouling-up or committing mistakes, take a look at anything else you may do and you will see mistakes are totally normal. When you really think about it, this part is just paying your dues which is really inescapable for anyone. Always approach anything you learn with an open mind, and look at your business with a critical eye to see how it can be implemented. Launching a product on the Internet requires a lot of background work and preparation. You need to get all the steps right if you want your product launch to go as planned. Successfully plan your product launch using the following tips. Distinct Sales Funnel: One of the crucial things that you need to focus on when launching a product is the kind of steps your potential customers will be taking to buy your product. You have to make sure that the provided sales funnel that you customers will experience will run smoothly right from the moment that they push the go button to the final thank you. When you are confident that you sales funnel is effective, it lets you steer clear of any problems that might arise during the ordering process. This ultimately plays a big role in making your launch successful. See to all little details so that the final results will be good. Get Rid of the Bugs: There will be things that just pop up and problems might come along as you continue to work towards your launch. This is going to happen. However, it is your main goal to ensure that things to do not go wrong and that all that will go wrong is squashed before the day of the launch. Inspect the product and ensure that nothing is wrong with it. The worthiness of your product will either reduce or increase your sales. So, it is very essential that you take care of any problems before they can happen. You can take any one of these methods and really go all out in your business because they will open up new venues for you, to be sure. We suppose many people are close-minded in matters like this because maybe they are arrogant or simply go through life like that. Most likely you are familiar with check it out or at least aspects of it. It is usually the beginners who can sometimes easily be deceived, and so if you are new to this then look around and do some additional reading. If you do lose money on some lame method that does not work, then you have learned a valuable lesson and just move on. Maybe it is just survival of the fittest and those who succeed are the ones who use common sense in business along with other qualities. We generally read horror stories from people who have not been online and in business for long. You know about trolls, and there are those who bad-mouth just about anything regardless of how good it is; so keep that point in mind. What you will usually end up doing is not wasting your time and money. Don?t Go for Perfection: Despite of what you?ve learned in the past about perfection and how you should try to make everything you do ?perfect?, you need to look beyond this aspect. You need to get the word out as soon as possible and let time take its course, without waiting for your product to be perfect. You can always take care of things in the background. For example, if you?re launching a software product online, even getting a working prototype out in the market will do wonders. What you need, and all you need, is a great idea that solves a problem and people to talk to about it. As soon as you feel comfortable talking about your product you should start doing so. All products launched online can potentially be huge, especially if the pre-launch is planned out. You can get hundreds of sales from your product launch if you use the tips discussed above to build a strong foundation.

(AP) ? The policewoman who killed an American contractor in Kabul is a native Iranian who came to Afghanistan and displayed "unstable behavior" but no known links to militants, an Interior Ministry spokesman said Tuesday.

The policewoman, identified as Sgt. Nargas, shot 49-year-old Joseph Griffin, of Mansfield, Georgia, on Monday, in the first such shooting by a woman in a spate of insider attacks by Afghans against their foreign allies. Nargas walked into a heavily-guarded compound in the heart of Kabul, confronted Griffin and gunned him down with a single pistol bullet.

The U.S-based security firm DynCorp International said on its website that Griffin was a U.S. military veteran who earlier worked with law enforcement agencies in the United States. In Kabul, he was under contract to the NATO military command to advise the Afghan police force.

Insider killings have eroded the trust between the foreign contingent and the Afghan government, just a year before most NATO troops are set to withdraw and turn security responsibility over to local forces.

The ministry spokesman, Sediq Sediqi, told a news conference that Nargas, who uses one name like many in the country, was born in Tehran, where she married an Afghan. She moved to the country 10 years ago after her husband obtained fake documents enabling her to live and work there.

A mother of four in her early 30s, she joined the police five years ago, held various positions and had a clean record, he said. Sediqi produced an Iranian passport which he said was found at her home.

"Her mental condition is not good," he said, describing her behavior as "unstable." He said that after she attended a recent training course in Egypt a "foreign government" ? a clear reference to Egypt ? informed Afghan authorities that she did not appear to be "normal."

On Monday, senior Afghan officials said the policewoman was licensed to carry the weapon into the compound and was well known there. On Tuesday, however, the chief investigator, Gen. Mohammad Zahir, told reporters that she was not authorized to carry weapons into the compound but managed to pass through security checks with a hidden pistol. Zahir said the lapse of security was also being investigated, as well as whether she had connections with foreign or local militant groups.

No militant group has claimed responsibility for the killing.

Zahir said that during interrogation, the policewoman said she had plans to kill either the Kabul governor, city police chief or Zahir himself, but when she realized that penetrating the last security cordons to reach them would be too difficult, she saw "a foreigner" and turned her weapon on him.

On Monday, NATO said that "some temporary, prudent measures" might be put into place to lessen exposure of NATO personnel to insider attacks, but the training of Afghan police would not be stopped. The NATO command had no additional comment on the case Tuesday.

There have been 60 insider attacks this year against foreign military and civilian personnel, compared to 21 in 2011. This surge presents another looming security issue as NATO prepares to pull out almost all of its forces by 2014, turning the war against the Taliban and other militant groups largely in the hands of the Afghans.

More than 50 Afghan members of the government's security forces also have died this year in attacks by their own colleagues. The Taliban claims such incidents reflect a growing popular opposition to the foreign military presence and the Kabul government.

(AP) ? People drawn to Newtown to share in its mourning brought cards and handmade snowflakes to town Monday while residents prepared to observe Christmas less than two weeks after a gunman killed 20 children and six educators at an elementary school.

On Christmas Eve, residents said they would light luminaries outside their homes in memory of the victims. Tiny empty Christmas stockings with the victims' names on them hung from trees in the neighborhood where the children were shot.

"We know that they'll feel loved. They'll feel that somebody actually cares," said Treyvon Smalls, a 15-year-old from a few towns away who arrived at town hall with hundreds of cards and paper snowflakes collected from around the state.

Organizers said they wanted to let the families of victims know they are not alone while also giving Connecticut children a chance to express their feelings about the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

At the Trinity Episcopal Church, less than 2 miles from the school, an overflow crowd of several hundred people attended Christmas Eve services. They were greeted by the sounds of a children's choir echoing throughout a sanctuary hall that had its walls decorated with green wreaths adorned with red bows.

The church program said flowers were donated in honor of Sandy Hook shooting victims, identified by name or as the "school angels" and "Sandy Hook families."

The service, which generally took on a celebratory tone, made only a few vague references to the shooting. Pastor Kathie Adams-Shepherd led the congregation in praying "that the joy and consolation of the wonderful counselor might enliven all who are touched by illness, danger, or grief, especially all those families affected by the shootings in Sandy Hook."

Police say the gunman killed his mother in her bed before his Dec. 14 rampage and committed suicide as he heard officers arriving. Authorities have yet to give a theory about his motive.

While the grief is still fresh, some residents are urging political activism in the wake of the tragedy. A grassroots group called Newtown United has been meeting at the library to talk about issues ranging from gun control, to increasing mental health services to the types of memorials that could be erected for the victims. Some clergy members have said they also intend to push for change.

"We seek not to be the town of tragedy," said Rabbi Shaul Praver of Congregation Adath Israel. "But, we seek to be the town where all the great changes started."

Since the shooting, messages similar to the ones delivered Monday have arrived from around the world. People have donated toys, books, money and more. A United Way fund, one of many, has collected $3 million. People have given nearly $500,000 to a memorial scholarship fund at the University of Connecticut. On Christmas Day, police from other towns have agreed to work so Newtown officers can have the time off.

In the center of Newtown's Sandy Hook section Monday, a steady stream of residents and out-of-towners snapped pictures, lit candles and dropped off children's gifts at an expansive memorial filled with stuffed animals, poems, flowers, posters and cards.

"All the families who lost those little kids, Christmas will never be the same," said Philippe Poncet, a Newtown resident originally from France. "Everybody across the world is trying to share the tragedy with our community here."

Richard Scinto, a deacon at St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, which was attended by eight children killed in the massacre, said the church's pastor, Rev. Robert Weiss, used several eulogies this week to tell his congregation to get angry and take action against what some consider is a culture of gun violence in the country.

Praver and Scinto said they are not opposed to hunting or to having police in schools, but both said something must be done to change what has become a culture of violence in the United States.

"These were his mother's guns," Scinto said. "Why would anyone want an assault rifle as part of a private citizen collection?"

A mediator who worked with gunman Adam Lanza's parents during their divorce has said Lanza, 20, was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, an autism-like disorder that is not associated with violence. It is not known whether he had other mental health issues. The guns used in the shooting had been purchased legally by his mother, Nancy Lanza, a gun enthusiast.

Gun control and mental health have also been topics at Newtown United meetings, along with what types of memorials would be most appropriate and any other action residents can take to feel like they are doing something.

"We don't want Newtown to go on the list with Columbine, Tucson and Virginia Tech and only have it associated with horrible acts," said Lee Shull, who moderated a Newton United meeting just days after the shootings. "We want to turn this into something positive. What can we do?"

A handful of people showed up to the group's first meeting at the town library two days after the Dec. 14 shooting. The next night, 35 attended, most scrawling ideas and notes on white paper covering the tables. A few days later there was barely room to maneuver around the meeting room when two guests showed up: Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Sen.-elect Chris Murphy, Connecticut Democrats who told the group they planned to push for gun control legislation and needed their constituents to help them press the issue in Washington.

The group sees itself as a way to spark a local and national dialogue and action in the aftermath of a tragedy. It's also a way to do something, anything, to cope with the sadness that has settled over Newtown.

Said resident John Neuhall: "Our hearts are broken wide open and we're here out of grief and out of love for those families."

In the human year system, which now counts around 1,000,028, the year 131 holds a very violent meaning. This was back when the beastmen had just learned how to use magic and had not yet become peaceful from it. To the beastmen, this event holds as the last act of government aggression.

The humans were in there wood and mud shacks, fiddling with their newly discovered iron. The sky turned a sudden and dreary black, as the howls, and hisses, and snarls of angered beastmen came raging across the human plains like the sound of a tornado. Within moments the 10 human camps in the area were burning and only a few humans survived. They then when on to spread word of the horrors of their foes and their new weapon, magic. In response to this unknown power, the king ordered the worlds biggest wall be constructed to keep such forces out. This wall is still well maintained by the humans, who now call it The Border.
