4 states will vote on same-sex marriage today | PennLive.com

Lady Gaga and Brad Pitt have weighed in on one side, evangelist icon Billy Graham on the other as the four-state showdown over same-sex marriage reaches its Election Day conclusion with the potential for a historic breakthrough.

Until now, same-sex marriage has been rejected in all 32 states that have held popular votes on the issue. Gay-rights advocates believe they have a chance to break that streak as Maine, Maryland and Washington state vote on whether to legalize same-sex marriage, and Minnesota votes on whether to place a ban on gay marriage in the state constitution.

In all, there are 176 measures on the ballots in 38 states, according to the Initiative and Referendum Institute at the University of Southern California. Washington, Oregon and Colorado could become the first to legalize recreational use of marijuana; Massachusetts is considering whether to allow physician-assisted suicide; Californians have a chance to repeal the death penalty.

But no other issue has generated the star power or multistate intensity of the same-sex marriage measures.

In just the past week, Lady Gaga released a video backing same-sex marriage, while Pitt donated $100,000 to support the cause. On the other side, Graham, 93, took out newspaper ads asking voters to support "the biblical definition of marriage between a man and a woman."

President Barack Obama also has entered the debate, endorsing the three gay-marriage measures and urging a "No" vote on the proposed ban in Minnesota.

Brian Brown of the National Organization for Marriage, which has spent more than $5.5 million in the four states opposing same-sex marriage, predicted Obama's stance wouldn't be enough to break the 32-state streak.

"People's personal conviction that marriage is the union of husband and wife is too strong to be swayed by what the president says," Brown said.

All four elections are expected to be close. In Maine, the latest poll showed gay-marriage supporters with a lead of 13 percentage points, down from a 21-point lead in September.

The referendum in Maine marks the first time that gay-marriage supporters have put the issue to a popular vote there. They collected enough signatures over the summer to schedule the vote, hoping to reverse the outcome of a 2009 referendum that quashed a gay-marriage law enacted by the Legislature.

A TV ad by gay-marriage supporters in Maine featured Republican state Rep. Stacey Fitts, who was opposed in 2009 but now plans to vote for it. "Society in general has come to the idea of why would we ostracize people for something that's part of who they are," Fitts said.

In both Maryland and Washington, gay-marriage laws were approved by lawmakers and signed by the governors earlier this year, but opponents gathered enough signatures to challenge the laws.

In Minnesota, the question is whether the state will join 30 others in placing a ban on gay marriage in its constitution. Even if the ban is defeated, same-sex marriage will remain illegal under a current statute in Minnesota.

Gay marriage is legal in six states and the District of Columbia ? in each case the result of legislation or court orders, not by a vote of the people.

Of the other issues on the ballot in multiple states, marijuana is perhaps the highest-profile.

Voters in Washington, Oregon and Colorado have a chance to do what no state has done before ? legalize the recreational use of pot by allowing adults to possess small amounts under a regimen of state regulation and taxation. The Oregon proposal has lagged, but the Washington and Colorado measures have a decent chance of passage.

If approved, the measures would set up a direct challenge to federal drug law.

"If one of these initiatives passes, it will be a watershed moment in the decades-long struggle to end failed marijuana prohibition policies in this country," said Ethan Nadelmann of the Drug Policy Alliance, a critic of the so-called war on drugs.

In Arkansas and Massachusetts, voters will be deciding whether to allow marijuana use for medical reasons, as 17 states have done previously. Arkansas would be the first Southern state to join the group.

Other notable ballot measures:

  • Massachusetts could join Oregon and Washington in allowing terminally ill patients to obtain lethal doses of medication if doctors say they have six months or less to live.
  • California voters could repeal their state's death penalty. If approved, the 720-plus inmates on death row there would have their sentences converted to life in prison.
  • Another contentious measure in California would require most genetically engineered processed foods sold in supermarkets and other outlets to be labeled as such.
  • California labor unions are the target of a measure aimed at depriving them of tens of millions of dollars they use to finance campaigns and political organizing. Proposition 32 would prohibit them from collecting money for state political activities from members through paycheck deductions.
  • In Michigan, labor unions succeeded in getting a vote on a first-of-its-kind ballot initiative that would put collective bargaining rights in the state constitution.
  • In Alabama, Montana, Florida and Wyoming, voters will weigh in on a key aspect of Obama's health care overhaul in the form of Republican-backed measures stating that no individual or business can be forced to participate in a health care system. The measures would violate federal law and attempts to enforce them would probably wind up in court.
  • Maryland voters will decide whether to uphold a new state law allowing some illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition at public colleges.
  • A measure in Montana would require people who receive certain state services to provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency.
  • Oklahoma voters will decide whether to abolish affirmative action programs in state government and education.
  • Minnesotans will decide on an amendment that would require showing a photo ID in order to vote.

Fire claims home, family of 7 now homeless | Fox10tv.com

SEMMES, Ala. (WALA) - A family is left picking up the pieces after the Semmes home they were renting was gutted by flames Monday morning.

Georgia Paige said she, her husband, and their five children, ages 3-14, are now homeless after their home caught fire. She said her mother and uncle were also living with them.

?I can't believe it. I want to be woken up,? said Paige. ?I thought it was a dream.?

The mother of five said it happened while four of her children were at school.

She said she went to the market with her mother, uncle, and youngest son. When the group returned close to 11a.m., she said the home was fully engulfed.

?My daughter?s children lost everything they had,? said Brenda Fritts. ?Everything and we just sort of waited around. Everybody was crying.?

Relatives said the blaze broke out shortly after they turned on the heater.

To make matters worse, the family also lost their pet Chihuahua in the fire.

Family members said they are already working to get back on their feet.

?Where do we rebuild? Where do we start at?? asked Paige. ?I'm just praying, where do we start??

The family is currently receiving help from the Red Cross.

Angela Lutin: How The Election Ruined My Love Life

The older I get, the more it becomes abundantly clear that politics can really screw up your sex life.

Take, for example, Bill Clinton.

The last time I was single during an election, Bill Clinton won. I was a freshman at a very conservative university in the South. God-fearing, Budweiser-drinking, bow-tie-wearing college frat boys were on my agenda. I kept my beliefs quiet. I wanted a date, not to be blacklisted from every party for the fall semester. When political bashing erupted, I just smiled and said, "Umm, this apple strawberry wine cooler is delicious, ya'll."

Over the years, I migrated even further south, as in Florida, and I found safety with like-minded individuals. I could quietly give a little fist pump for Hilary without everyone throwing beer cans at me.

Then I got divorced. My marital status wasn't the only winds of change rolling in. Just as my life was turning upside down, it seemed so was my social circles' stance on everything from welfare to healthcare.

I don't put political stickers on my car. Nor do I wax poetically on my Facebook page about why my candidate is the "only" choice. However, I do write a blog. One that makes reference to my vagina on a regular basis, a vagina I am actually quite fond of and prefer to keep free of eminent domain. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out which side of the fence my lady bits are positioned on. However, I don't make a big deal about it nor would you ever see me posing in a Baywatch-esque swimsuit endorsing a candidate. (For the record, posing with mountains of Krispy Kreme doughnuts would not be a problem.)

But now here I am, at the peak of my single status prowess and political tensions are at an all time high. Eventually, a date will ask your thoughts on the election. I could get away with deferring to my wine cooler in college, but at my age, there's only so much chardonnay one can drink before coming up for air and answering the question.

Some dates try to use discretion, scampering around the topic with inquiries like, "Do you prefer CNN or Fox for your news?" or "Did you see that movie, 'An Inconvenient Truth?'" (As if my answers to either of those questions would definitely out my political leanings. Ok, maybe they would.) Generally, I'm an open book. If the chemistry is rocking, I have no problem telling a love interest what color underwear I'm wearing on the third date. But inquiring as to what lever I'm pulling in the voting booth? I'm a little old-fashioned for that. Let's keep the mystery alive, shall we?

Recently, however, I never even made it to the first date without politics ratting me out prior to curfew. It was the last night of an extended gig in a different city. I decided to patronize the most fabulous establishment in town to celebrate. As I was sitting in this swankiest of lounges, sipping champagne, an incredibly handsome man walks in and takes the seat next to me. Things were about to get interesting.

The conversation soon turned to where we were from. "Washington D.C.," he said. I'm not world traveled, but I do know that if you are from LA, chance are good you are tied to the entertainment industry, and if you reside in D.C., well, you probably have an solidly formed opinion on politics. I had a 50/50 chance this was not going to go my way.

Our chemistry was off the charts. "Have dinner with me," he said seductively.

"I can't," I protested as I motioned to the open notebook strategically placed in front of me. I wasn't very convincing.

"You're going to decline dinner with me to work? On a Friday night. While you are drinking champagne?"

He saw through my guise. I knew I either had to kill the fantasy or make it happen. "So what do you do in D.C.?"

"I'm in politics. I own a company that is one of the leading fundraisers for the Republican Party," he delivered proudly.

It was then that I had my epiphany: Politics might get an overweight white guy laid, but for the rest of us, politics can be a certified game killer. You can both like long walks on the beach, foreign films, Seinfeld reruns, and vacationing in Napa, but if your core beliefs are on opposite sides of the aisle, it's highly doubtful you will ever walk down the aisle, unless you are Carville and Matalin, and I still don't understand how one doesn't stab the other when they sleep.

"Are you sure you won't have dinner with me?" He made one last attempt in an even sexier tone.
"I can't. But thank you." I delivered the news with a "this hurts me more than it does you" ring to it.

About an hour later, he sent over a glass of champagne. The note read, "Here's to the best party coming out on top November 6th."

I'll drink to that and to these elections being over. We need to get back to debating important things, like which Baldwin brother is the best actor.

Banking & Finance: North Bay banks report largely stronger earnings

Banks across the North Bay are reporting earnings, including:

Exchange Bank announced a net after tax profit for the third quarter of $3.2 million, 7 percent higher than during the same period last year.

Total assets increased $82 million ?5 percent ? over the 12 months ended Sept. 30. Strong core deposit growth lead to the accumulation of those assets, according to Exchange Bank, and total assets now exceed $1.63 billion.

The net value of loans was lower compared to the same period in 2011 ? $1.01 billion, versus $1.04 billion. Investment securities have increased, with $388.8 million compared to $310.7 million last year.

The bank?s provision for loan losses was $2.1 million as of Sept. 30, down from $3 million at the same point in 2011. That decline was possible due to continued improvements to asset quality, with a 35 percent reduction in nonperforming assets over the past 12 months.

***

Bank of Marin Bancorp (Nasdaq: BMRC), the parent company of Bank of Marin, reported net income fell nearly 24 percent in the third quarter but was up nearly 8 percent in the first nine months of this year.

For the third quarter ended Sept. 30, net income totaled $3.2 million, a 23.8 percent decrease from the same three months in 2011. The bancorp attributed that decrease largely to a heightened quarterly loss provision of $2.1 million primarily due to a $4.2 million commercial real estate loan. It is currently in the process of foreclosure, according to the bank.

For the nine-month period, earnings increased 7.7 percent to $13.1 million from $12.2 million earned during the same nine months in 2011.

Despite the increased provision for the quarter, the bank?s total loss provision for the nine-month period was less than half the $4.6 million allocated in the first nine months of 2011. The bank had allocated $100,000 in the prior quarter. Bank of Marin?s total risk-based capital ratio was 14 percent as of Sept. 30, up from 13.3 percent at the same point in 2011.

***

Net assets at Summit State Bank grew 11 percent over the first nine months of the year to $429.72 million and loans increased 5 percent over the same period, to $283.3 million, the bank reported.

Revenue from a one-time legal settlement helped boost net income for Summit State Bank (NASDAQ: SSBI) for the quarter ended Sept. 30, .

The bank reported net after-tax income of $977,000 for the quarter, 139 percent higher than during the same period in 2011 and equal to 19 cents per diluted share.

Nonperforming assets declined to 3 percent of total assets as of Sept. 30, compared to 4.2 percent in the prior quarter.

***

Sterling Financial Corporation (NASDAQ: STSA), parent company of Sonoma Bank and Sterling Bank, reported net income of $30.6 million for the third quarter of 2012. Those earnings represented a 170.9 percent increase versus the same quarter in 2011, driven by asset growth, increased profits from mortgage services and the sale of certain investment securities.

Net assets rose 3.1 percent over the twelve month period, reaching $9.47 billion as of Sept. 30. Gross loans rose 9 percent, to $6.14 billion. Loan originations for the quarter rose 9 percent compared to the same point last year, at $457.1 million.

***

Westamerica Bancorporation (Nasdaq: WABC), the parent of Westamerica Bank, reported third-quarter net income decreased 10.7 percent from a year before, a decline attributed to a low interest-rate environment.

Net income was $20 million in the third quarter, ended Sept. 30. ?Quarterly net interest income on a tax-equivalent basis was $48.7 million, declining 11 percent over 12 months.

Credit quality improved during the quarter. Current?nonperforming assets were?$71 million, representing a 33.7 percent decline in value from a year before. Those loans represent 1.45 percent of the bank?s net assets, currently valued at $4.89 billion.

As of Sept. 30, Westamerica had $2.2 billion in loans outstanding and a risk-weighted capital ratio of 16.2 percent.

***

AltaPacific Bancorp (OTCBB: ABNK), the parent company of AltaPacific Bank, reported net income increased 36 percent in the third quarter and nearly tripled in the first nine months after its merger with Southern California?s Stellar Business Bank. Third-quarter earnings were $344,000 as of Sept. 30, a 14.7 percent increase from those of the second quarter and up 36.5 percent from a year before.

Net income for the first nine months of the year was $1.2 million, up 380 percent from a year prior. Net assets totaled $222.1 million as of Sept. 30, up 4.4 percent from the second quarter and 92.6 percent from 12 months before. Deposits grew 120.6 percent over the year to $168.6 million.

Gross loans totaled $98.5 million, a 13.9 percent decrease over the prior quarter but up 64.5 percent versus Dec. 31 of last year. Deposits totaled $168.6 million, 7.9 percent greater than in the prior quarter.

***

American River Bankshares (NASDAQ-GS: AMRB), owner of American River Bank, reported net income of $780,000 for the quarter ended Sept. 30. Quarterly earnings fell 28.2 percent compared to the same quarter in 2011, driven largely by a high rate of loan payoffs versus originations.

Meanwhile, earnings for the first nine months of the year have risen compared to 2011, with net income of $2.3 million representing a 39 percent increase. Nonperforming assets have declined from 4.27 percent of assets to 3.5 percent over the prior twelve months. The bank has net assets of $584.6 million, a half-percent increase from the prior year. Net loans decreased 8.7 percent to $270.2 million, driven largely by the reduction to nonperforming assets.

American River Bank has refocused its efforts on business lending recently, a move that involved bringing its Sonoma County subsidiary, North Coast Bank, under the American River brand. The company has also unveiled a number of programs designed to help advise business customers.

Upload images to Google Cloud Storage and retrieve public url (php lib)

I hate to ask these questions, but I really have no idea where to start. Been looking all day for a nice example on how to use Google Cloud Storage in PHP, with no success.

What I want to do is simply upload an image from client to GCS and then retrieve a public url to store it in db. It's probably necessary to upload it to my server first and it's ok, because I'll have to crop it first on client-side. So I should probably take an image from server, upload it to GCS and retrieve public url.

But are there any php libs for managing all these oauth authentications and uploading etc.? If so, is there any example of a basic implementation?

Or maybe there is possibility to upload an image directly from user browser to my bucket in GCS? But I'll have to manipulate the image later, so I would probably have to use php anyway.

Follow These Tips To Be Successful At Internet Marketing

Marketing online today is one of the most important things you can do for the success of your business. The success or failure of your business can depend on how well you market your website online. Now is the time to get into it. The following advice will assist you in your Website marketing campaign.

How well your website works is no less important than the experience customers have when they visit your store in person. Take the time to visit your website to spot problems, update old information and add new graphics. Customers won?t shop at a store if they can?t get through the front entrance; online customers won?t likely wait around while you fix site bugs.

Always follow up a sale by positively interacting with customers. Ask your customers to write reviews or fill out surveys after they have a chance to try our your product.

Read the various studies done on the psychology of Affiliate marketing and web design. These psychological factors may affect the way someone sees your company, based on the design of your site. This is crucial information you can use to maximize profit.

Hard work beats luck any day of the week. Working hard creates its own luck, and it is common to all successful affiliate marketing ventures. Big business do not get that way through being lucky. Is the overwhelming success of the Coca-Cola brand a fluke? Not really! It takes hard work to market a product or a brand.

Be sure to incorporate free samples or coupons inside your shipping containers that are similar to the product your customer is purchasing. People appreciate these coupons and free samples, and as a result, they are more likely to check out your website again, which leads to more sales.

Always make sure you have a slogan and a logo for your business, even if you?re just running a small, Internet based firm. These two things help customers differentiate you from all the similar businesses out there. A great tagline will be remembered by customers. When a customer is ready to buy a product, he might remember your slogan even if he doesn?t remember the name of your business. In the age of the internet, that?s not a big problem.

Website marketing is all about finding a problem and trying to fix it. Look at the top questions of each day, and begin your day by composing some answers. If you are in the position to solve a problem for someone, you are also in the position to turn them into a customer.

Make sure your site is full of high-quality content. Your website needs to be setup properly for important SEO purposes, and at the same time needs to gain and keep the interest of customers you bring in thanks to Online marketing.

The purpose of your website should be obvious immediately to visitors. This helps to keep your site professional while showing what you are all about. This will help you highlight your services and the reasons for your commitment to your products and customers.

One thing you have to realize about affiliate marketing is that it?s more of a hands-on, as-you-go type of art than it is a set science. Try to understand and master each side before you begin your affiliate marketing strategy. Pursue an analytic approach when it comes to sales and profits stats, etc., yet try to be creative and inventive when it comes to visual, design, and motivational aspects.

You should be able to see how useful this is to your business. You can approach this method in a variety of ways. There?s a vast amount of information out there about the benefits of this. Follow these helpful tips and you can find success.
